April 18, 2004 2nd Division Marine Band at the Kenilworth Lodge 2004
The 2nd Division Marine Band of Camp Lejeune, NC, sponsored by the Kenilworth Lodge, performed a concert on Sunday, April 18, 2004 in front of the lodge. The 44 piece band performed a variety of pieces including Birdland, Amazing Grace, a 007 James Bond medley and the Armed Forces medley with an Iwo Jima flag-raising reenactment. The hour and a half concert included a variety of instruments including bagpipes and a set of timpani drums! The concert drew an audience of about 1800 people. The concert was conducted by band officer, CWO2 Michael J. Smith, with selections conducted by SSgt Joel M. Daniel.
The band also conducted clinics for 160 students from the three local high school bands. The clinics included the morning "raising the colors" ceremony. The Kenilworth was alive with the sounds of music - brass, woodwinds and percussion clinics.
The final segment of the event was a big band concert/dance performed by the 18-piece Jazz Ensemble. This was a wonderful evening with two forty-five minute sets of the classics of Glen Miller, Count Basie and other dance pieces. There was a full audience of approximately 180 people. Other Marines in dress blues chose unescorted ladies for a memorable turn on the dance floor.The big band concert was conducted by MSgt Mark E. Michielsen.
