Kenilworth Lodge is the annual host to several birding tour groups. You might ask why. Because, Highlands County is an unexpectedly good area for birding! It is one of the largest habitats for the endangered Florida Scrub Jay and is also home to Florida’s largest concentration of Osprey nests. It is also hosts a habitat for the rare Red Cockaded Woodpecker at the Avon Park Air Force Wildlife Range. Other sitings around area often also include: Florida Grasshopper Sparrow, Sandhill Crane, Burrowing Owl, Swallow-tailed Kite several varieties of egrets and more.

There are 4 sites listed on the Great Florida Birding Trail, in addition to a variety of back roads that the local residents know of. Call the Kenilworth Lodge for a copy of the regional Great Florida Birding Trail brochure or a birdling list for Highlands Hammock State Park.
